Family Office

Comprehensive, coordinated wealth management for UHNW families - investments, legacy, stewardship, and governance as one integrated whole.

When Wealth Becomes a Family Enterprise, It Needs a Family Office

For most families who have built or inherited significant wealth, a point arrives when the traditional advisory model - a portfolio manager, a CPA, an estate attorney, each working in their own lane - is no longer sufficient. The wealth has become a family enterprise: multiple trusts, operating companies, real estate, private investments, philanthropic structures, and a rising generation that needs to be prepared.

Families that preserve wealth across generations do not do so by accident. The research is clear: 70% of wealth is lost by the second generation; 90% by the third. The primary causes are not investment underperformance - they are breakdowns in communication, unprepared heirs, and the absence of structures that keep a family aligned, informed, and governed by shared values.

A family office model addresses all of it. Not just the portfolio - the whole picture: investment strategy, estate architecture, tax coordination, risk management, lifestyle, philanthropy, and the governance structures that give a family its best chance of remaining cohesive across generations.

What We Do: Multi-Family Office Services for UHNW & HNW Families

Clexperus provides comprehensive family office advisory services - the coordination infrastructure for families whose wealth, values, and legacy require more than a single advisor can deliver.

We help you:

  • Assess whether a Single-Family Office, Multi-Family Office, or Virtual Family Office model fits your situation
  • Build an integrated investment strategy spanning public markets, alternatives, private equity, and direct investments
  • Architect estate and legacy structures: dynasty trusts, GRATs, IDGTs, FLPs, and charitable giving vehicles
  • Coordinate tax planning across entities, jurisdictions, and generations with your CPA team
  • Develop family governance documents, values statements, and next-generation education programs
  • Manage lifestyle, concierge, and stewardship services alongside financial coordination
  • Protect family wealth from legal, cyber, reputational, and insurance risks

We act as the family's financial quarterback - the coordinating partner that keeps every advisor, every structure, and every family member working from the same plan.

Clexperus does not provide tax preparation, legal drafting, or insurance underwriting. Services are coordinated alongside qualified CPAs, estate attorneys, and specialist advisors.

What Every UHNW Family Eventually Asks

A point arrives in every family’s wealth journey when the traditional advisory model - capable specialists working separately - is no longer sufficient for the complexity they have built. The questions become about the whole picture, not the individual accounts.

How do we keep our advisory team aligned across investments, tax, and estate?

What structures do we need to make wealth transfer actually work?

How do we prepare the next generation without undermining their drive?

Who is responsible for making sure nothing falls through the cracks?

How do we stay private, secure, and protected in an increasingly complex world?

What does it take to keep this family together, intentional, and communicating?

Choosing the Right Family Office Structure

The right structure depends on complexity, cost tolerance, privacy requirements, and how many families need to be served. Clexperus operates as a Multi-Family Office - providing the depth of a dedicated family office without the $1M+ annual cost of a single-family office infrastructure.

Single-Family Office

SFO

A private, dedicated firm serving one family exclusively. Maximum personalization and privacy. Typically requires $100M+ of investable assets to justify the cost of a full internal team (~$1M+/year).

  • SEC-exempt under Family Office Rule if advising family clients only
  • Complete control over team, systems, and strategy
  • Highest cost; least scalable
Multi-Family Office

MFO

Comprehensive family office services shared across multiple families. Economies of scale provide access to institutional-level expertise, alternatives, and technology at a fraction of SFO cost. The Clexperus model.

  • Registered investment adviser; fiduciary standard
  • Institutional access with relationship continuity
  • Ideal for $10M-$100M+ families
Virtual Family Office

VFO

All services outsourced to a coordinated network of specialists under one orchestrating advisor. No physical infrastructure; maximum flexibility. Well-suited for families comfortable with remote, technology-enabled delivery.

  • Lower fixed cost; highly customizable
  • Advisor acts as quarterback across outside specialists
  • Requires strong central coordination discipline

The Four Family Capitals

Family office work is not just about financial capital. Families that preserve wealth across generations actively steward all four capitals together.

F

Financial Capital

Investable assets, business interests, real estate, and cash flow - the visible wealth that other capitals protect and sustain.

H

Human Capital

The skills, character, health, and values of each family member. The most important capital - and the hardest to transmit across generations.

I

Intellectual Capital

Knowledge, wisdom, and creativity within the family. Financial literacy, entrepreneurial instinct, and the capacity to steward complex wealth responsibly.

S

Social Capital

The family’s capacity to connect with and contribute to the broader world - relationships, philanthropy, and the legacy that outlasts any individual generation.

Internationally Connected Families & Their Advisors

Serving International Families - and the Offices That Advise Them

Many of the families we serve have assets, residency, or family members spanning multiple countries. US tax reporting obligations, FBAR and FATCA requirements, US-situs estate exposure, and cross-border investment coordination are areas where US-based advisory expertise matters significantly.

For international single-family offices and multi-family offices whose principals or beneficiaries have US connections - US citizenship, green card status, US-situs assets, or pending US residency - the regulatory and compliance burden of maintaining a direct US investment advisory presence is substantial. Clexperus welcomes conversations with international offices seeking a trusted, licensed US advisory partner to serve their US-connected clients. We handle the US regulatory and operational structure; you maintain the primary client relationship.

To discuss a strategic arrangement for your office and its US-connected clients, contact us directly through the calendar below.

Start With a Family Office Conversation

Whether your family is building out its first governance structure or already operates a sophisticated SFO, we begin with a confidential conversation about complexity, goals, and what a coordinated family office model would look like for you.

Clexperus does not provide tax preparation, legal drafting, insurance underwriting, or trustee services. Family office advisory is coordinated alongside your CPA, estate attorney, and specialist advisors. Services and fee structures are discussed in a direct conversation.

Why Choose Clexperus for Family Office Services

Integrated, Not Siloed

Every element of your family's financial life - investments, estate, tax, philanthropy, governance - is managed as one coordinated whole. Not separate conversations with separate advisors.

Multi-Generational by Design

Our approach is built around the premise that wealth that matters persists. Planning, governance, and education are structured from the first conversation with the next generation in mind.

Institutional Access, Boutique Attention

Access to alternatives, private equity, direct investments, and institutional research - with the relationship continuity and personal attention that large platforms cannot provide.

Global Fluency

We serve families with US and international ties - cross-border assets, residency considerations, reporting obligations, and advisors across jurisdictions, all coordinated from one point of contact.

Values-Aligned Leadership

Your family's values, mission, and philanthropic intent are not separate from the financial plan - they are woven into every structure, every decision, and every next-generation conversation.

Wealth that matters persists - when the family is as prepared as the portfolio.

Why Wealth Transfer Fails: The Research

Williams & Preisser found that 70% of wealth is lost by the second generation and 90% by the third. 60% of cases traced to breakdowns in communication and trust; 25% to unprepared heirs. Only 15% traced to poor planning or bad advisors. The solution is governance and education - not more investment performance.

The Coordinated Model That Makes It Work

A family office is not a product - it is a coordination model. At Clexperus, the pillars above are not separate engagements; they are integrated into a single, coherent family plan. Your investment advisor, estate attorney, CPA, and insurance specialist all work from the same blueprint - because your family deserves a quarterback, not just a roster.

Family Office - Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions clients most often ask about family office structure, who benefits, costs, and how we work with existing advisors.

A family office is a coordinated advisory model that manages all dimensions of a wealthy family's financial and personal life - investments, estate planning, tax strategy, risk management, philanthropy, governance, and lifestyle - as one integrated whole. It differs from traditional wealth management in scope: where most advisors manage the portfolio, a family office manages the entire family enterprise.

You may benefit from a family office approach if:

  • Your wealth spans multiple structures (trusts, entities, real estate, alternatives)
  • You have multiple advisors with no central coordination
  • You are managing wealth across generations or transitioning from a business exit
  • Family governance, next-gen education, or philanthropic structuring is a priority
  • Your financial complexity regularly falls through the cracks between specialists

There is no single wealth threshold. We work with families across the $5M-$100M+ range who value the coordination, integration, and relationship depth that a family office provides.

A Single-Family Office (SFO) is a dedicated, private firm serving one family exclusively. It provides maximum personalization and privacy but typically requires $100M+ of investable assets to justify operating costs of $1M or more per year. SFOs are exempt from SEC registration under the Investment Advisers Act's Family Office Rule, provided they advise only "family clients," are wholly owned and controlled by family members, and are not held out to the public as an investment adviser.

A Multi-Family Office (MFO) provides the same comprehensive services to multiple families, creating economies of scale that make institutional-level expertise, technology, and alternative investment access available at a fraction of the SFO cost. MFOs are registered investment advisers subject to fiduciary standards. Clexperus operates as an MFO.

The practical difference: SFOs are built for the largest, most complex family situations. MFOs deliver the same scope of services for families who want depth and integration without the infrastructure overhead.

We operate as the coordinating partner - not a replacement for your existing specialists. We call this the "quarterback model."

Your CPA handles tax preparation; we coordinate the tax planning strategy with them. Your estate attorney drafts documents; we design the structures and ensure they integrate with your investment plan. Your portfolio managers execute trades; we set the investment policy statement, asset allocation framework, and performance review cadence.

Many clients find that bringing Clexperus in as the central coordinator significantly improves communication between specialists - because for the first time, every advisor is working from the same family plan rather than their own silo.

We begin with a comprehensive family discovery meeting: goals, values, current advisory relationships, family complexity (entities, trusts, family members, jurisdictions), and what coordination gaps exist today. From there, we build a Family Office Blueprint - a written plan that maps every element of the engagement.

Ongoing, clients receive:

  • Quarterly family meetings (investment review, estate and tax updates, governance topics)
  • Annual family office review (all advisors present, plan updated, next year priorities set)
  • Access to our specialist network (estate attorneys, CPAs, insurance specialists, alternative investment platforms)
  • On-call advisory for major transactions, liquidity events, and family situations
  • Next-gen education programs coordinated around family meeting cycles

Services and scope are discussed directly and documented in an engagement agreement. We do not publish fee schedules on the website - complexity and scope vary meaningfully across families.

Cross-border family situations require specific attention to US tax reporting (FBAR, FATCA, Form 3520 for foreign trusts), US-situs estate tax exposure, and the interaction between US and foreign investment structures. We coordinate with international tax specialists and local advisors in the relevant jurisdictions.

For international family offices and MFOs whose clients have US connections, we also serve as a US advisory partner. US citizenship or green card holders, US-situs asset owners, and US-resident beneficiaries of foreign trusts often require dedicated US-based advisory coordination that international offices are not positioned to provide directly. We welcome conversations about how to serve your US-connected clients through a structured advisory arrangement. Contact us directly to discuss.

Private wealth management at a large institution typically means a relationship manager coordinating a platform of proprietary products - investment management, trust services, lending - built around the institution's capabilities. Services are comprehensive within that platform but bounded by it.

A family office relationship is:

  • Open architecture - not tied to any single institution's products or custodians
  • Broader in scope - governance, education, lifestyle, and family dynamics are as central as the portfolio
  • Longer-term in orientation - the plan is built around your family's legacy, not product cycles
  • Conflict-reduced - as a registered investment adviser, Clexperus operates under a fiduciary standard, not a suitability standard

Many families maintain both: institutional relationships for banking, lending, and custody, alongside a family office advisor for coordination, governance, and independent oversight.
